Types of Dye Used in Sublimation Printing
Source:ZS Machinery Time:2016-08-16 Click:929 Times
Sublimation printing uses disperse dyes. They are the only class of dye that will vaporise at transfer temperature and bond with a synthetic fibre.
In practice you will meet three forms:
- Digital sublimation ink – used in inkjet printers, supplied in bottles or cartridges. The usual choice for short runs and photographic work.
- Disperse dye for offset and gravure printing – used to print large volumes of transfer paper. Cheaper per square metre for long runs.
- Paste disperse dye – used in screen printing of transfer paper for heavy coverage.
The dye needs a synthetic fibre to bond with. On polyester it gives excellent wash and light fastness; on blends the depth of colour depends on the polyester content. Cotton, silk and wool will not take sublimation dye at all.
